On 20th October 2016, Glashütte Original celebrated the official opening this evening of its first Boutique in Austria, with an event entirely under the sign of excellence and the fine arts. The German watchmaker took the opportunity of this glamorous occasion to present its new Senator Excellence models.
It is just recently in the long history of watchmaking that all these brands have spent the time and resources to developing in-house chronograph movements. While there are dependable and capable options such as the Valjoux 7750 available, the capability to come up with something in-house renders the newest quite a bit of bragging rights and can be valued by the modern day collecting community. Obviously, there’s an ongoing debate on the worth of in-house movements in addition to indictments of this clinic that are quite persuasive. But, we can’t allow this wider discussion direct us away from talking about the motion at hand.The calibre 37-01 defeats at 4Hz and provides 70 hours of power reserve. The brand even claims they have a new oscillation system that guarantees only a 5 percent deviation from that 70 hours of power reserve. The chronograph mechanism has a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter and can be activated by a column-wheel. Normally, chronograph moves are either clutch triggered or column-wheel actuated and while the former is far easier to design and manufacture, the latter is promised to offer a smoother pusher action and less wear on elements over time.The movement is visible via a screen caseback and in authentic Glashütte style, there’s a three-quarter plate, swan-neck regulator, heat-blued screws, and plenty of beveled edges.
