When you think of “Kickstarter watches,” an established Swiss brand like Alpina Watches España Replica probably doesn’t come to mind. To release their new Alpina AlpinerX Outdoors Smartwatch model, however, Alpina has opted to release the watch on Kickstarter with plans to take feedback from backers to mold and alter the design before its final release. The Alpina AlpinerX is an “horological smartwatch” with an analog/digital display, 5 sensors, a smartphone app, and 3,200 color variations to boot.

In 2014, Alpina established its Alpiner 4 collection, based on a classic version from 1938 and integrating the “four essential features” that specify a sports view: anti-magnetism, shock resistance, water-resistance, and stain-resistance. This year, the brand adds two new members into the Alpina 4 household, the Alpiner 4 Automatic and also the The Alpiner 4 Automatic, the initial easy, three-hand date model in the group, includes a 44-mm stainless steel case and a bidirectional rotating bezel that can be used for time events. Three dial colours are accessible — silvered, black, and Alpina’s hallmark “glacier blue,” which has been reintroduced with this model. All of the Automatics include stitched leather straps, black or brown, with red lining.Like the very first Alpiner 4 GMT from 2014, the new GMT Alpiner 4 GMT “Business Timer” is powered by the Sellita-based Alpina Caliber AL-550, that features automatic winding and also the exact same variety of stones, frequency, and power reserve as the motion in the automatic. This motion controllers a GMT (second-time-zone) function which enables the user to set the local time by independently shifting the hour hand at one-hour increments while the red, arrow-tipped 24-hour hand always displays the home time. The watch has its nickname from the red-and-blue “Pepsi” GMT scale round the dialup, whose colour scheme reflects business-opening hours round the world, enabling a traveler to check at a glance if his home time zone is open for business. The steel case is 44 millimeters in diameter and has a bidirectional turning bezel; the dials — accessible here in black or silver — are sunray-finished with applied luminous indices and luminous-coated nickel palms.

Analysis

This isn’t Alpina’s first foray into the smartwatch world, they’ve adjusted a few of their other models like the Seastrong and added smart functionalities in the past. The AlpinerX takes this a step further with the addition of the digital display, allowing you to easily view the functionalities of the watch which are all operated via the crown. Alpina has included many functions that G-shock fanatics are used to at this point like a worldtimer, compass, temperature, barometer, and stopwatch/timer, but adds in smartwatch functionalities like call and message notifications via the smartphone app.

I generally have little interest in smartwatches because they don’t scratch that horology itch for me, but I am a sucker for a well-designed analog/digital watch, and I won’t complain about handy things like message notifications and a 2-year battery life. I find it interesting that Alpina Watches Ceo Replica has chosen to launch this on Kickstarter. For such an established brand it hardly seems necessary from a funding standpoint. However, the move to launch on Kickstarter is allowing Alpina to reach a different crowd, perhaps some that don’t have a major interest in horology, but that do have an interest in technology or someone that just wants a reliable, good-looking smartwatch from a Swiss brand. As many of these established brands are experimenting with ways to reach out to new buyers, through things like celebrity endorsements or sponsoring events, I think it will be interesting to watch how Alpina’s Kickstarter experiment works out.

Gone is the derived mashup of tool and dress diver components located on the outgoing Alpina Extreme Diver (reviewed here) version, in favour of a clean, timeless, and certain aesthetic that quietly brings priority to form more function — but barely at the cost of the latter, since the Alpina Seastrong Diver 300 Automatic remains a 300-meter dive watch, after all.In fact, I’d also argue that the most striking design element is actually the lack thereof. Take, for instance, how the Alpina Extreme Diver’s sword hands have been replaced with a skeletonized handset, whose minimized surface area results in a cleaner, more unobtrusive view of the dial. Yes, these palms tear a relatively familiar page from this Panerai Luminor Submersible book, but the touch isn’t exclusive to Panerai, and it works well in complementing the minimalist aesthetic. Then there’s not having a fully graduated minute trail on the sloped chapter ring, which averts the dial’s depth while further opening up the dial and gives the rounded baton indices lots of space to shine. And shine they do because the applied polished surrounds play any available lighting, while the luminous centers glow reassuringly back from the dark. Granted, there’s not a ton of luminous paint them — however a 1000-lumen blast from an LED flashlight was more than enough to maintain the dial legible to the wee hours of this afternoon. Conversely, the omission of many of the dial’s perceptible details such as a luminous second hand along with a minute track causes a distinct lack of accuracy, which may disturb those who prefer their divers with much more purposeful visual cues. However, this is not an ISO-rated diver, nor does it aspire to be one — a mindset that I had been surprised to find extremely refreshing on the wrist. Rather, Alpina lets its confidence-inspiring build quality do the speaking, resulting in its very own distinct aesthetic that felt just as at home in an alpine lake, because it did around the conference table in the marina.

Summary

The AlpinerX is a continuation of Alpina’s efforts to introduce horologically interesting smartwatches to the world and is their first Kickstarter release. While the analog/digital display and the mere mention of the word “smartwatch” might be a turnoff for many collectors, I find this to be a well-designed watch with some cool functionality and is something I could easily see making it onto my wrist. alpina.com
